Fear Control

As rookie bouncer learning the ropes I used to observe how quickly and explosively the head doorman would grab and eject someone as I helped or watched his back. Rapid response and most importantly teamwork were the principles I learned in becoming a bouncer. The venue where I started work was used for student nights during the weekdays but on the weekends was the watering hole of all those turned down by the more upmarket establishments of the city. Working the weekends I would often get the butterflies of the slow adrenaline dump when starting my shift knowing I will almost certainly be dealing with a fight before closure.

To Live and Die

After a hiatus, I am once again teaching martial arts. It has been a while since I put my thoughts, philosophies and insights into a blog. I am once again in that period of limbo when in between jobs I have some time on my hands. At times like this, my mind starts to wander as a deluge of memories and nostalgia comes pouring in.

Seattle Volunteer Park cemetery over a decade ago; I remember paying homage to my hero, Bruce Lee, as I visited him and his son’s tombstones.  This man was probably the greatest influence on my decision to pursue martial arts. Hello! I am new.

Hello, my name is Caleb. I am new to the blog stuff and I am looking for some guidance.

At the moment, I am on federal probation for possessing marijuana on a military installation. I am half way through my probation, but I'm in a town where it surrounds me. I also got into stealing and it cost me some friends and it got me into trouble. Then while I was in trouble for stealing, I trusted a "friend" who offered to help me out while I was struggling. I have managed to keep myself out of trouble lately, but now I'm jobless and I'm always worried about my next meal and money for bills. I was only thinking 'money, money, money,' so I started growing a marijuana plant. I know that on a good plant I would get around $500. Nobody knew about it, but my uncle (the person I was staying with) went in my closet for something and kicked me out. My Dad is a US Marine and my Mother used to be one also. They moved to Okinawa when I got put on probation and I could not go.

Intro to Krav

Last weekend I ran my Intro to Krav Maga seminar at Glenfield. I was fortunate enough to have the editor of PhysicalArts attend my seminar. I think all who attended had fun and walked away with a few useful techniques. Those attending got to experience the rawness of the system with its direct striking methods (combatives), its tactical approach and simple self-defence applications.
